About
Willow Glen Middle has served the community of San José, California for nearly 75 years. Our school was built in 1950, and was formerly called Edwin Markham Middle School, named after famous poet Edwin Markham (1852-1940). Markham taught literature in El Dorado County until 1879, when he became Education Superintendent of the County. Markham attended an early college in Vacaville, CA, where he studied literature, and eventually completed his classical courses in 1873 in Santa Rosa, CA. At the time of his death, he’d amassed a huge personal library of 15,000+ volumes. Edwin’s correspondents included Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ambrose Bierce, Jack London, Carl Sandburg and Amy Lowell. Today, Willow Glen Middle has a team of 97 employees who serve nearly 1,200 students in grades 6-8.
At Willow Glen Middle, parents and staff work together to ensure that each student receives a rigorous and comprehensive education in a safe, caring environment. All students have the opportunity to think critically, work both independently and collaboratively, take risks, and be creative. Students are at the core of all decisions and our team is committed to helping students become lifelong learners and preparing them to be the thinkers, leaders, and creators of tomorrow.
Families are encouraged to learn about parent participation opportunities through school committees and school connected organizations. If you want to visit Willow Glen Middle, please review our visitor guidelines.
